The Annual Seismic Design Competition
Every year, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute hosts
an undergraduate Seismic Design Competition in a major city.
Over 40 schools from all over the world participate in a week long
competition, where students have the opportunity to showcase a
specific design accustomed to certain rules and guidelines that
the EERI board sends out. Chapters design, test, and construct a
model out of balsa wood and ship it off to the competition location.
There, If any rules are violated, points are ticked off, and the key
goal is to have no record of mistakes throughout the measurement
process. In addition, the model will be subjected to three ground
motions, the third one the most intense. The annual Seismic
Design Competition is a great learning experience for students,
and a wonderful event to network with other professionals in the
structural engineering field. Learn more about the competition and
