USC EERI Seismic Design Competition 4th place
USC EERI Seismic Design Competition 4th place April 30, 2012 --The University of Southern California Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) student chapter placed 4th among 28 teams in the EERI Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition. To compete, the team built a model skyscraper out of balsa wood to various specifications. The balsa building was tested on a shake table and subjected to three different earthquakes. USC's building was one of the few structures that survived all three earthquakes completely undamaged.
The competition was held in conjunction with EERI Annual Meeting and National Earthquake Conference in Memphis, Tennessee, at the Peabody Hotel. The conference included workshops and exhibits surrounding around the theme “Learning for the Past to Protect the Future.” The Conference was held on April 10th through the 13th. The conference was attended by leaders from industry, academia and government.
